Lynn Johnson is an award-winning entrepreneur, Girl Advocate, and CEO of Spotlight: Girls – a “Best for the World” certified B Corp based in Oakland, CA that inspires, educates, and activates girls & women to take center stage and become the leaders we have been waiting for.
At a very young age, Lynn caught the acting bug and spent her childhood participating in theater, dance, and other arts programming that helped her find her voice and connect with all types of people. When her family moved to Concord, MA in the middle of her 8th grade year, she used her drama geek superpowers to help her navigate the pressures and traumas of being the only Black girl in a lily white town. Throughout her youth and into her college years studying theater at Northwestern University, Lynn discovered her purpose on this planet - to use arts and culture to stand up to the inequitable systems that keep us separated from ourselves and each other so that we can co-create communities where all of us can live free.
After decades of teaching and mentoring thousands of girls (and other genders) of all ages all over the country, in 2008, Lynn and her wife, Allison Kenny (an award-winning blogger, author, and performer) co-founded Go Girls!™ - the beloved summer camp and afterschool club. Based in the Go Girls!™ Culture Code, their 5-point social/emotional learning framework, Go Girls!™ helps hundreds of girls each year to make bold and brave choices in the world. Lynn has raised over half a million dollars for Go Girls!™ and has been recognized and supported by Ashoka Changemakers, SheEO, and the Force for Good Fund. In 2017, Lynn won SheKnows Media’s #ThePitch competition at the famed BlogHer Conference in Orlando, FL.
Currently, Lynn is a highly sought-after speaker and coach using the Go Girls!™ Culture Code to help other social entrepreneurs and Girl Advocates create the types of learning environments girls need to thrive. As the co-founder and Executive Producer of Oakland Freedom Theater and the co-founder of the Dismantle Collective, Lynn is passionate about using art, empathy, and radical care to dismantle white supremacy, patriarchy, and all other forms of oppression.
Lynn and Allison have been married since 2006 and live in Oakland with their yappy dogs and their very favorite Go Girl!, their daughter whom they adopted from foster care in 2004. As a multiracial, queer family, they find joy in the everyday moments - sharing every meal together, making art, playing games, trips to the local library, and having ice cream cones out back in the sunshine.
